Climbers try to find the most challenging way up a rock just to do it. When we invent things that make it easier, we call it aid. It's nonsensical, but we love it. Aid is about embracing that toughness with modesty and humility, no matter what grade you climb.

"Aid climbing" is when you pull on gear to assist your climb. As equipment advances or enters the sport, like knee-pads, fancy chalk, or fans, some climbers consider these items aid because it makes climbing easier, in theory.
